Firefighters Rescue Great Dane from Deep Well

Lastest Updated February 13, 2025

When an 11-month-old Great Dane puppy named Mudge accidentally plunged 50 feet into an old well, her North Carolina family was faced with a heartbreaking situation.

Trapped and terrified, Mudge was stuck in the dark for hours, unable to get out on her own.

In a desperate bid to save her, the family called 9-1-1, and first responders from three fire departments immediately sprang into action.

The rescue mission was far from easy, but the firefighters worked together with incredible teamwork and determination to bring Mudge to safety.

After several challenging hours, their efforts paid off, and the brave puppy was safely rescued, free from the well and ready to start a new chapter in her life.

This heartwarming story is a testament to the incredible work of rescuers who put themselves at risk to save animals in need.

It reminds us of the heroism behind every rescue and the unwavering dedication of those who ensure that even the most vulnerable animals get a second chance.

Mudge’s Miraculous Rescue

Mudge, a large dog with a love for running along the trails of her family’s new property, had always enjoyed the freedom of exploring the wooded areas with her sister, Moonshine.

But one day, while running through the trails, Mudge accidentally tumbled into a dried-up well, hidden deep within the property.

The well was far from the house, and the Haldine family never anticipated any problems in that area.

When Mudge didn’t return, the family immediately sensed something was wrong.

Their son, Henry, was the first to notice her absence and alerted the family to begin a search.

As they neared the well, the desperate barks of Mudge echoed from below.

Knowing that immediate action was needed, the Haldines quickly called 9-1-1.

A Team Effort to Rescue Mudge

Firefighters from three different departments, Cary Fire, Fairview Rural Fire, and Swift Creek Fire, teamed up to rescue Mudge, using specialized rope rescue equipment and a tripod system to safely lower a firefighter down into the well.

After hours of careful and coordinated effort, Mudge was finally pulled to safety.

The moment she was freed, Mudge expressed her gratitude by licking the face of the firefighter who helped her, a heartwarming sign of relief and connection.

A Happy Ending for Mudge

Despite the terrifying ordeal, Mudge miraculously emerged unscathed, with only a small scratch on her ankle.

The family, deeply thankful to the brave and skilled firefighters, made sure the well was properly covered to prevent future accidents.

With her rescue complete, Mudge returned to the playful, joyful life she had always known, running around with her sister and enjoying her time with the family who loves her so much.

The Haldines will forever be grateful to the firefighters who risked their time and energy to bring their beloved dog back home, and they reflect on how Mudge's fall may have been a blessing in disguise, potentially preventing future tragedies.
